July. Hot. Hotter. Hottest. We dodge the heat and go from office to home for air conditioning. Our weekends are planned around the weather report for the heat. And August is just around the corner and boding the same weather.
So how do we plan an inviting outdoor gathering? Shade sails, a pergola, trees positioned to create shade, outdoor curtains.... all these simple, inexpensive items will add personality and shade to your seemingly desert-like patio or deck. Mid-summer sales on spas make that a more affordable idea. Add chair cushions to metal furniture to avoid that back-of-the-leg burn. Take furniture off the deck and put it under a tree. Make the deck the play space for the kids who don't care about the heat ! Adults under the tree with cool wine and fresh fruit/cheese. Much more comfortable !
Indoors can seem confining and boring. In days gone by our grandmothers/mothers knew that summer meant removing the heavy throws and pillows from the sofa and chairs. Muslin slipcovers are in vogue again and will change a dark chair or sofa into a beach-like, cooler place to read with iced tea. Change the dark lamp shades to white. Bowls of shells, fruit, or sand/candles will bring back memories of days at the shore ! Inexpensive changes can change your indoor entertainment areas into a lake house feeling and that will bring to mind many more fun ideas for staying inside in the cool.
Look at the deck and the living room and CHILL OUT !!!!
