Smell. It is the one sense that can pull us in or push us back.
When you get off the plane for your tropical vacation the sun hits you but then......THE SMELLS. Green. Sun. Different.
Smell is such an important part of our life. It captures memories. It creates atmosphere. We associate smells with people and places.
I have a tiny bungalow and it's very earthy. The interior is rough hewn wood and my design theory is boho-classic-comfortable. My winter scents are woodsy - cedar/orange - birch/oak - with a little patchouli mixed in just because I am a child of the 60's. Not one person has ever walked into my house and not commented on how warm it smells.
Winter, in particular, can bring some pretty funky smells into the house with all the windows closed, pets, wet boots, etc. Choose a theme for your scents and spread them all over the house. Make sure they are cohesive. They don't have to be exactly the same, but with the same base.
Candles, diffusers, essential oils - all wonderful ways to bring a different dimension of personality to your home. (P.S. - my new favorite is ceramic rings that sit on the lightbulbs in a lamp and hold essential oil. The warm bulb heats the oil.)
